Helping People Work Better Together

My definition of an "excellent workplace" is that it should be ethical - - and that means treating employees honestly, compensating them at a mutually-satisfactory level for their work, rewarding them with many intangable benefits that might not cost you anything but will indeed enhance your own bottom-line, and theirs, and making them feel part of your business, which they are.
My definition of an "excellent workplace" includes honoring your employees as the stars who they are, treating them with respect and appreciation for their work - - offering a positive work environment where they will enjoy going to work and performing well. All employees at all levels need a positive work environment that emphasizes what they do right and corrects what they do wrong.

My definition of an "excellent workplace" includes finding ways to make work fun and balancing the workloads of the employees with a feeling of being welcomed at work. Too often employees get into the "rut," and then face "burnout," because they get the feeling from management and business owners that they are being merely tolerated and given a paycheck. ANY workplace environment can be more fun and more enjoyable, and can become more a place to look forward to going to rather than leaving.
My definition of an "excellent workplace" has to include smiles - - many of them - - and "thank yous" - - many of those - - because both smiles and thank yous communicate appreciation and respect. Way too many employees go through their workdays without cracking a smile or saying a thank you, except perhaps to customers and clients. Every business has a culture, and smiles and thank yous promoted from the top down can change any organization. Go ahead - - try it tomorrow, and see what happens. It's Workplace Magic.

My definition of an "excellent workplace" is one where the bosses - - the owners and managers - - have an attitude that lower-level employees are working WITH them, not FOR them. It's sometimes a tough mindset adjustment, but an important one, for managers to say "please," "thank you," "good job," and "it was great working with you today" at the end of the workday. It's amazing how those positive gestures will get your productivity and efficiency up, and how it will eventually contribute to everyone enjoying their work more. And it is good for business to do so.
My definition of an "excellent workplace" also includes ethical treatment of all employees: that they be treated fairly, that when disciplined they are not singled out, that they are told what they are doing "right" as well as what they are doing "wrong," that they are corrected in private as much as possible, that they are listened to, that they feel equally involved and accepted, that each employee has the opportunity to excel and succeed, that they realize they can offer suggestions or complaints of their own to management, and that when they have a winning idea or perform well they are rewarded in a real way. That's simply good business.
